Continuing Medical Education Intended Audience This activity was developed for healthcare professionals seeking information regarding facial aesthetics and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures. Statement of Need The aging mouth has been an ongoing focus of advanced facial aesthetics over the past few years. Aging of the perioral region including oral commisures, perioral rhytids, and marionette lines, is caused by a variety of internal and external factors including extended UV exposure, smoking, weight reduction, illness and hormonal changes. Treatments can range from minimally invasive to more assertive surgical approaches. Successful perioral rejuvenation can be accomplished with minimally invasive procedures such as botulinum neurotoxins and dermal fillers for volume. As a class, dermal fillers are evolving as a popular option as either mono-therapy or in combination with a neurotoxin or another filler. Despite the popularity and extensive use of dermal fillers for enhanced volume in the nasolabial fold regions, glabella and lip augmentation, little training has been made available for clinicians considering the use of fillers to produce perioral volume correction. As the use of dermal fillers expands into the perioral regions, it is important that clinicians understand advanced injection techniques, clinical implications and expected outcomes. Importantly, patient satisfaction remains a key measure of success related to volume correction with fillers and the importance of full correction to ensure complete patient satisfaction cannot be underestimated. Therefore an unmet need exists for advanced training for the successful use of fillers in the volume correction of the perioral region.
